Description
One of the most iconic view of New York! In 1984 when I was kid I saw the poster of the famous Martin Scorsese Once Upon The Time in New York and loved that view. I like how the building reveals a part of the Manhattan Bridge, it gave me a sense of how huge and incredible New York is.
About 15 years ago I started becoming a professional photographer, and in 2013 the very prestigious Berlin Publisher Teneues asked me to do a black and white book on New York. One of the first photos that I wanted to take was this very specific spot. But every time I came there it was crowded with people. I kept coming back over and over and there was no go.
But after two weeks of patience it started pouring rain so hard that the streets were getting more and more empty. I took a cab all the way to Brooklyn and Miracle no one was there.
I set up my tripod with a very high end camera and tried a lot of different framing and between cars coming.
The rain almost ruined the shot, my wife protected the camera and the tripod with her umbrella.
I developed the photo in the style of old film that has a high contrast and a low saturation. A style you can see in movies like Saving Private Ryan. It is an old process called Bleach Bypass. Because back in the day, they used to add bleach in the chemical process to get this effect. When I posted this on my instagram, the photo went viral and got over 7257 likes, it was the highest I ever got at the time.
I sold this photo in over 85 galleries around the world and it was originally published as a black and white version in my first New York book.
